Thank you for bringing this up Jac.  I just signed the card, and it took literally 30 seconds....so there's no excuse not to!

For those of a non-American persuasion, in a week and a half we will be celebrating Memorial Day.  This is a national holiday during which we honor those who have given their lives in the pursuit and defense of our freedoms, and the freedoms of those around the world.  No matter what you think about the US or our foreign policy, there is one fact that stands above all else: we truly believe that we are blessed to have the liberties that our constitution affords us, and wish to share those same blessings with those who do not have them.  Our soldiers, seamen, airmen, and all other service members volunteer their time, efforts, talents, and very lives to preserve those blessings for whom they love, and to bring those blessings to utter strangers.

So thank you, most sincerely, to everyone who has served our nation.

A comment made by a British servicemember on another forum reminded me of something else.  I can't say that all US servicemembers get the message, but most of us, past and present, also honor the memories of the servicemembers of other countries that we've fought and worked beside as well as those we've fought against.  Granted, each person's definition of soldier is different, but everyone has an idea of what it means to be a true, honorable warrior.

Such warriors can be of any nationality, race, color, creed, or gender, putting on any uniform (or in the case of Romans and Greeks, no uniform at all), and in all cases fighting so that someone else doesn't have to.  One goes and one must stay behind, otherwise there's no one left at home worth fighting for.  Basically, we seem to have days to honor all sorts of people.  Any more, the US has whole months to honor genders and cultures.  We only have two days that honor servicemembers.  Veterans Day, to honor all who have served and Memorial Day to honor those who have died as a result of their service.

I hope on this one day, everyone can put aside socio-political principles and simply honor the warrior who has fought to the death for what he/she believed in.

That reminds me of what is perhaps the only notable quote I ever heard from Dick Cheney.  Back during one of the vice-presidential debates in 2004, John Edwards was trying to denigrate all of our efforts in Iraq.  He said something along the lines of "and why do we have to take on all of the responsibility over there?  We have more troops there than all other nations combined."

Cheney responded with "How DARE you belittle the efforts and contributions of our allies?"

I just finished reading a book, called Ghosts of War. The author, a member of the Army reserve, tells all about his tour - from why he joined to his post-traumatic stress. It was a very moving book, and shows even better exactly how important our troops are.

The thing I think is too often forgotten is the people who are out there are not the people on the news. When they get on the news, they've been told to smile and wave. And like Elaura et al said, whether the overarching goal is your favorite thing ever or no, they're still doing something I probably couldn't. So... I signed one of the cards.

So far, I've had a family member in every American war since the Revolution, so Veteran's Day means a good bit to me, been to a couple parades and rode with RCMC, signed cards(online and off), and had a generally good day.


How I see it, is that every life is like a wonderful storybook, why should one's story ever be forgotten? Especially with such a courageous and honorable death.

When i lived in NY (5 years ago) the KID that we made do all the crap work and who i became friends with, is currently in Afghanistan, he may be 22 now but i still think of him as the 17 year old punk kid that he was. He should be finishing his tour come June. I have made a point of bothering him on FB on a regular basis to let him know the respect and appreciation for i have his service. People can have issues with the conflicts but the Americans that are there bringing the fight didn't choose the conflict so no one has the right to have issues with them.
