Some basic tips to get you started:

Some of the following will apply to both Morrowind and Oblivion; however, when requesting help, please specify which game you are having difficulty with.

  • Restart your computer - leftover services running in the background can really slow things down.
  • Run a complete scan for malware.  Unknown programs, even when they aren't viruses, will bog down MW.
  • Defrag your harddrive - many game crashes/slowdowns can be solved just by doing this regularly.
  • Turn off memory resident anti-virus/spyware/firewall/system monitors and such.  MW sucks up CPU like you wouldn't believe and this town ain't big enough to share resources.
  • Make sure you have all the latest updates to the game, expansions, and all third-party programs you are using.  MCP is no longer optional for Morrowind.
  • Try your new mod on a new character with only the third-party programs and mods it is intended to run with.  If you have no problems at this point, you can begin to look at conflicts.
  • If you use a leveled list merger (recommended) such as Wryemash Mashed lists, delete the existing mashed/merged list file and recreate it.
  • Use MLOX or a similar program to help you reorder your mods.  When in doubt . . .
  • Post your mod list sorted by load order.
  • Be clear in your explanation of the problem and when it started.

For Oblivion only:

  • If you use a third party program such as Wrye Bash, OBSE, OBMM, TES4LODGen, etc., please specify which program(s) and which version(s) you are currently using and post any applicable errors or warnings given by those programs.

TESIV:POSItive Is also good link for troubleshooting a modded Oblivion.

For modders:

  • post your script and any error messages you have received.
  • let us know what programs you are using and their versions.
  • be clear in your explanation of the problem, when it started, and what you are trying to accomplish.

**in the event you are having texture issues and have installed texture replacer(s), sometimes accidental omissions are made in these replacers and it's very easy to forget that you have installed them.  To eliminate texture replacers as a possible cause for your problem, make sure you have them backed up in a safe place and do a clean install of MW and any expansion packs you are using.  Add them back in one at a time and check each time for the problem.**

Moderators, if you have other suggestions, please feel free to edit my post.  If anyone else has any basic advice that would help, PM me and I will add them.  If you find it particularly helpful, it might even make it to the status of *sticky*.  YAY! My first sticky!

EDIT:  Thanks to Leonardo for the Oblivion-specific tips.

Thanks for the thread, Elaura! Everybody, please do not post questions about how to fix mods in here, make a new thread so that this one doesn't get cluttered. If you have any suggestions that are not included, then post then and we'll edit the first post. Thanks.

New report: At least one AV/Anti-malware program will prevent MCP from patching Morrowind.exe.  If you are having problems, plese make sure you have no programs "protecting" your game files from being patched.
