MAJOR problems in Morrowind...

Postby Antes on Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:04 pm

First off, I don't really know if this is the right forum for this, but I didn't know where to put it. Please move it if there is somewhere else that it is supposed to be.

Okay, so a few days ago I went searching for my .ini file for Morrowind, and I found like 8 or so copies of it, but they were all different. So out of thinking that they were useless, I deleted them, and only kept the one that was in the Morrowind directory. Well...let's just say that that hasn't worked out so well. The problems that have been occuring with Morrowind since then;

Problems
- I no longer have any savegames. I've looked for the folder, and I know it's hidden, and the way I've usually found it is not working. It seems to have just disappeared off the face of my CPU.
- Upon loading Morrowind, it does not go to the Morrowind Menu anymore, I end up as a default Dark-elf, the way one would appear in the CS if you go to the NPC tab and choose "Player". Not only this, but I appear automatically behind the ruin of "Assarnatamat", conveniently in cell 0,0 -- In the Ashlands.

Help?  :orcsword:

[Question 1]
Question=On a clear day you chance upon a strange animal, its leg trapped in a hunter's clawsnare. Judging from the bleeding, it will not survive long.
AnswerOne=Draw your dagger, mercifully ending its life with a single thrust?
AnswerTwo=Use herbs from your pack to put it to sleep?
AnswerThree=Do not interfere in the natural evolution of events, but rather take the opportunity to learn more about a strange animal that you have never seen before?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA1.wav

[Question 2]
Question=One summer afternoon your father gives you a choice of chores.
AnswerOne=Work in the forge with him casting iron for a new plow?
AnswerTwo=Gather herbs for your mother who is preparing dinner?
AnswerThree=Go catch fish at the stream using a net and line?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA2.wav

[Question 3]
Question=Your cousin has given you a very embarassing nickname and, even worse, likes to call you it in front of your friends. You have asked him to stop, but he finds it very amusing to watch you blush.
AnswerOne=Beat up your cousin, then tell him that if he ever calls you that nickname again, you will bloody him worse than this time.
AnswerTwo=Make up a story that makes your nickname a badge of honor instead of something humiliating.
AnswerThree=Make up an even more embarrassing nickname for him and use it constantly until he learns his lesson.
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA3.wav

[Question 4]
Question=There is a lot of heated discussion at the local tavern over a group of people called 'Telepaths'. They have been hired by certain City-State kings. Rumor has it these Telepaths read a person's mind and tell their lord whether a follower is telling the truth or not.
AnswerOne=This is a terrible practice. A person's thoughts are his own and no one, not even a king, has the right to make such an invasion into another human's mind.
AnswerTwo=Loyal followers to the King have nothing to fear from a Telepath. It is important to have a method of finding assassins and spies before it is too late.
AnswerThree=In these times, it is a necessary evil. Although you do not necessarily like the idea, a Telepath could have certain advantages during a time of war or in finding someone innocent of a crime.
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA4.wav

[Question 5]
Question=Your mother sends you to the market with a list of goods to buy. After you finish you find that by mistake a shopkeeper has given you too much money back in exchange for one of the items.
AnswerOne=Return to the store and give the shopkeeper his hard-earned money, explaining to him the mistake?
AnswerTwo=Decide to put the extra money to good use and purchase items that would help your family?
AnswerThree=Pocket the extra money, knowing that shopkeepers in general tend to overcharge customers anyway?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA5.wav

[Question 6]
Question=While in a market place you witness a thief cut a purse from a noble. Even as he does so, the noble notices and calls for the city guards. In his haste to get away, the thief drops the purse near you. Surprisingly, no one seems to notice the bag of coins at your feet.
AnswerOne=Pick up the bag and signal to the guard, knowing that the only honorable thing to do is return the money to its rightful owner?
AnswerTwo=Leave the bag there, knowing that it is better not to get involved?
AnswerThree=Pick up the bag and pocket it, knowing that the extra windfall will help your family in times of trouble?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA6.wav

[Question 7]
Question=Your father sends you on a task which you loathe, cleaning the stables. On the way there, pitchfork in hand, you run into your friend from the homestead near your own. He offers to do it for you, in return for a future favor of his choosing.
AnswerOne=Decline his offer, knowing that your father expects you to do the work, and it is better not to be in debt?
AnswerTwo=Ask him to help you, knowing that two people can do the job faster than one, and agree to help him with one task of his choosing in the future?
AnswerThree=Accept his offer, reasoning that as long as the stables are cleaned, it matters not who does the cleaning?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA7.wav

[Question 8]
Question=Your mother asks you to help fix the stove. While you are working, a very hot pipe slips its moorings and falls towards her.
AnswerOne=Position yourself between the pipe and your mother?
AnswerTwo=Grab the hot pipe and try to push it away?
AnswerThree=Push your mother out of the way?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA8.wav

[Question 9]
Question=While in town the baker gives you a sweetroll. Delighted, you take it into an alley to enjoy, only to be intercepted by a gang of three other kids your age. The leader demands the sweetroll, or else he and his friends will beat you and take it.
AnswerOne=Drop the sweetroll and step on it, then get ready for the fight?
AnswerTwo=Give him the sweetroll now without argument, knowing that later this afternoon you will have all your friends with you and can come and take whatever he owes you?
AnswerThree=Act like you're going to give him the sweetroll, but at the last minute throw it in the air, hoping that they'll pay attention to it long enough for you to get a shot in on the leader?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA9.wav

[Question 10]
Question=Entering town you find that you are witness to a very well-dressed man running from a crowd. He screams to you for help. The crowd behind him seems very angry.
AnswerOne=Rush to the town's aid immediately, despite your lack of knowledge of the circumstances?
AnswerTwo=Stand aside and allow the man and mob to pass, realizing that it is probably best not to get involved?
AnswerThree=Rush to the man's aid immediately, despite your lack of knowledge of the circumstances?

Level3=You realize that you are catching on to the secret of success. It's just a matter of concentration.
Level4=It's all suddenly obvious to you. You just have to concentrate. All the energy and time you've wasted -- it's a sin. But without the experience you've gained, taking risks, taking responsibility for failure, how could you have understood?
Level5=Everything you do is just a bit easier, more instinctive, more satisfying. It is as though you had suddenly developed keen senses and instincts.
Level6=You sense yourself more aware, more open to new ideas. You've learned a lot about Morrowind. It's hard to believe how ignorant you were -- but now you have so much more to learn.
Level7=You resolve to continue pushing yourself. Perhaps there's more to you than you thought.
Level8=The secret does seem to be hard work, yes, but it's also a kind of blind passion, an inspiration.

Level20=You'll never be better than you are today. If you are lucky, by superhuman effort, you can avoid slipping backwards for a while. But sooner or later, you're going to lose a step, or drop a beat, or miss a detail -- and you'll be gone forever.

Considering you only have two mods installed, the easiest solution is to re-install. Your saved games should be in the morrowind\saves directory. back them up (copy them) to a temporary folder and copy them back after the re-install. You shouldn't lose any progress at all. :)

If you google it you should be able to get an original morrowind.ini from one of the MW sites. I could send you mine if you like but you'll have to edit out the gamefiles section. Nothing else is modified in my ini file except adding the yes to all function.

The first problem is just a file issue. Unless you deleted them, they should be hanging around. Probably in one of Windows' Super Hidden (tm) folders.

The second one is mod-related. You need to make sure the prison ship cell and Seyda Neen are pre-loaded in the INI and GMSTs. Make sure you aren't running any mods that might break that. Those two contain some scripts that are needed to trigger the main menu.

Re: MAJOR problems in Morrowind...

Postby Antes on Sun Jul 25, 2010 2:53 pm

Yes, okay. Thanks so much guys. Everything you all said did exactly as I needed. I have a few more questions though, they've always bugged me about the game.

1. I can't take screen-shots, I've set it to "1" in the .ini file but no matter what it has always been there. I get a pop-up in game;
"ScreenShot: Not Enabled. Add 'Screen Shot Enable = 1' to the [General] section of the .INI file."

I've tried programs that are based on editing the .ini file, but still, to no avail... Help?

2. A long while ago I downloaded Arktwend, a large conversion for Morrowind. It is basically a whole different game. Because of that "different game" title, it added a whole new intro movie and it also added Splash screens. Well now, even though I'm playing Morrowind, it has been only displaying the Arktwend intro movie and Splashes. It is kind of irritating me, as the splash screens and intro movie are kind of bad compared to the ones I've downloaded. Another reason I don't like these splash screens and the opening movie are because well, I'm playing Morrowind, not Arktwend. Help on making those not display?

3. Finally, I'm having a problem with my stats screen. The one that shows your characters name, level, and all that jazz. It is displaying on the screen when I'm not in menu mode, and it is getting pretty irritating. A while ago I tried uninstalling the game and it still showed. If you don't understand, read below.

Arktwend information: http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/tota ... d-english/

Example of stats screen glitch:

Notice how on the bottom left, even though I'm playing, the stats screen is showing up. This has been bugging me for a long time and is probably the most annoying of these "glitches" ( I guess ) that I'm experiencing. Help?

Thanks, again guys.

Go to your morrowind directory and click on data.  There should be a folder inside called splash.  Go in it and delete anything that is related to Arktwend.  As for the intro movie, it might have replaced the new one and might be a little harder.

1. Try using a program like Fraps to take your shots.

2. It's generally recommended that you install Arktwend in a separate Morrowind install to prevent problems like this. Afaik the movies are stored on the Morrowind CD, to get them back you'll have to find the one Arktwend installed and delete it from your data files.

3. See the little clicked in box on the upper right hand of the stats screen? Open menu mode and click there, close menu mode.

If you're using MGE, you have to select Enable screenshots in the MGE gui. After that, even though you are getting that message, screenshots are being taken.  Look for the screenshots in the MGE default screenshot directory.  If you don't like that message box, remap the screenshot key to any other key in the Macro editor within MGE.

As for the stats menu.  In the shot, you can see there is a box in the upper right hand corner of the menu.  It's dark, meaning it's pinned.  Click that and the menu will unpin.   Whoops, didn't see that Diva had already answered that one.

Elaura: That doesn't seem to work. I can't fill in the "Allow Screenshots" box, it is grayed out. Here's what I mean.

Wolf: Thanks, that helped for the screenshots, I should have guessed that, quite the obvious answer... :banghead:  Oh well, thanks anyways!

Oubliette: Thanks, I got the intro scene to work! Thanks for the advice. Thanks for the thing about the stats screen as well. I'd have never guessed that...

Thanks for the help guys!

Edit:

One final question (hopefully); how might one go about getting a Ps3 controller to work for Morrowind (if it's possible). I've tried it but my attempts have...failed. I ask simply out of curiosity, to see if anyone here has used a controller for Morrowind...Thanks!

To get MGE's screenshot feature to work you may have to map a hot key with the macros editor. Open macros editor pick the key you'd like to use, choose function and then screenshot.

As far as game controllers go, a few people have used 360 controllers, but I haven't heard of PS3 ones being used. You may try using a wrapper/filter program, Google may offer help. If you can get it to show up as a mouse and/or joystick, Morrowind supports those.

I don't believe you can use a ps3 controller.  You have to buy a Xbox controller for windows.  Its around $60 for the wireless one.  Then again PS3 controller uses a usb cable for its charging thing.

Shoot, I knew that!  Sorry, Antes; maybe I should just stop trying to help on this thread . . .  Yes, you DO have to set up a macro to take screenshots with MGE.  However, if you map it to the regular PrtScr key, you *may* continue to see the "screenshots are not enabled" message.  At this point, you are actually taking screenshots, despite the message.  If you are one of those who gets that messagebox, just remap the screenshot function to any key other than PrtScr.

Thanks everyone! I got screenshots working! I don't really have the money for an Xbox 360 controller (facepalm)... Nor do my parents... hmm...I suppose I'll just have to stick with the keyboard then.

I thought I would do a little research this morning and heres what I found.  You need to make a driver for the ps3 controller.

Thanks for the time researching it though :D
I'll see if I can't do the same and find some way to get this to work. Thanks again guys.

Lol Deathstalker, good thing I have Windows 7 lol. I hope I don't have the same problems because of their similarities :o

well, Depends on whether or not you have a 64bit system actually. So you may want to check if the different versions of W7 can be either 32 or 64. cause if your system is 64bit, the driver for the PS3controller is a hell of a lot harder to use.

I did more research and found a new way to use a ps3 controller for a windows 64 bit computer.  Antes it looks like you have to do a little more work having windows 7 instead of vista.  However read the instructions very carefully and completely.  If you do not understand what you should do, do not do it.  Im not going to do it because I have enough money for the xbox controller for windows and using this method you cannot use the vibration on the Dualshock controllers.  Here is the link.
