I have my doubts since they're once again setting a game in a "land of men"-I would have by far preferred it if they'd gone with Summerset Isles instead.  The dragon thing is kind of intriguing though-until the reveal I was guessing Falmer or perhaps even Akaviri (could still be the latter I suppose-they're supposed to be a bit reptilian although I don't remember ever reading anything about dragons).  A dragon seemed kinda cool-but then a bit disappointing because honestly dragons are typical fantasy fare-on one hand it's "Cool, we FINALLY GET TO SEE A DRAGON IN AN ELDER SCROLLS GAME!!", on the other it's "Wait, I already sort of saw one at the end of TES IV and in nearly every other fantasy game I've already played-LAME!"

I can only hope they've taken community feedback to heart and have tried to add a bit more depth to the land, the story, the gameplay and well-EVERYTHING.  Hopefully the fact that they've made us wait so long for this means they're planning on giving us a quality product.  Oblivion was a descent game on its own merits, but when you compare it with Morrowind it's severely lacking in many respects.  I'm not expecting anything quite as good as Morrowind from Skyrim but I'm hoping Bethesda tries to strike a better balance between catering to console gamers and catering to series fans-and by that I mean shifting the balance a bit more in our direction. lol

I'm also very curious as to how Province Skyrim will be reacting to this news.  I suppose they could just continue with whatever direction they're going in but odds are there are going to be a TON of inconsistencies between for instance key locations and such.  <a href=http://www.provincecyrodiil.com>Province: Cyrodiil</a> (gotta advertise since we've now got a brand new website with its very own domain name!) isn't exactly going to carbon copy Oblivion but generally speaking most things are about in the same spots-there's just going to be more of it and a more diverse and unique look to everything.  I'm just glad I'm not in charge of or directly involved with that project-but I'm really curious about how they're going to choose to proceed given this news.

My problem with Summerset Isles is that I frankly don't think it would be possible for Bethesda to create it as it is presented in lore, at least at the moment. The Altmer are supposed to have sculpted it with their magic, I think, and the Altmer are easily the most magical race and are among the most mysterious races. While Argonia would solidly be the most difficult province to create, Summerset Isles would be the second most difficult, in my opinion. My expectation for a Summerset Isles game is that it exceed my expectations of Summerset Isles.

It is typical fantasy fare, yes, but actually it makes sense, at least as far as my incomplete understanding of the related lore is concerned. Dragons, as far as I can remember, are basically angels. They're the servants of Akatosh. I think it was in Oblivion where the theory sprang up that Akatosh and Lorkhan are one and the same. Now up until the events of Morrowind Lorkhan was basically being held captive in Red Mountain. The Nerevarine freed him by destroying the heart. Lorkhan is presented as the sort of god who wouldn't just sit around if free; he would start moving. And as such, it can be expected that his servants would start moving, too.

Again I might be wrong; this is hardly my area of expertise. However, when I found out that the dragons are supposed to be awakening that was the first thing that sprang to mind. As my opinion of Skyrim in general, though, it has a large potential to be brilliant, and a large potential to be really dull.

I'm also very curious as to how Province Skyrim will be reacting to this news.

I heard that TES: V would take place 200 years after the events of Oblivion. Even if that isn't the case, what with the chaos that would probably follow the Oblivion crisis things would change a lot, in my opinion. While there may well be many discrepancies, I'm sure that many can be explained away by the subsequent events. For the rest, I'd just go with artistic license. The differences will probably be less than those between Arena Vvardenfell and Morrowind Vvardenfell or Arena Cyrodiil and Oblivion Cyrodiil or, for that matter, Arena Daggerfall and Daggerfall Daggerfall.

Yay, Skyrim! It is must advised to be played in the summer, for it would be a bit cold in winter. Snow outside, snow in the game... Brr.
(That is why, in Morrowind game, I always move back to the mainland, when it is summer, even if all my current quests are in Solthseim. )

I totally like this place they chose... But it seems to the player will be the Dragonborn...? :/ I always thought that Tiber Septim is the Dragonborn...But if we will be just a help of him, I'll be totally happy.

Apparently they're having trouble making up their minds on this. Yesterday evening word of god came down that they were using a version of Gamebryo based on Oblivion's, but they had a new engine (completely unrelated to GB) in development, now they're suggesting that's what the new game is on. Hopefully they've picked the engine already...

For pc´s running the thing,both mw and ob runs on most computers,then on the other hand we all know that with mge and certain ob and mw mods you actually need a monster setup, but almost anyone can play the ordinary,vanilla game today.Guess it will be similar with tes 5,with the bar risen a bit but still playable for most peoples computers,and a monster to run it at full graphical party,and mods to come I´m sure in traditional TES-style  

I like bloodmoon and bruma quite a bit,so skyrim can be fun,I just looking forward to this even if it means upgrade my hardware again,it just never ends

they didn't say it was but i had watched Conan earlier this week and a bunch of other people think it is too.

I'll need a new beast to play this pile could play OB with a new video card but it still would be about the bare minimum, but with Jac saying he is going to try to make a Jasmine mod for FO3 i just may have to get a new PC.

Ha, I knew it!  I've been saying it would be Skyrim for quite some time now.  I have to say that I sure hope it doesn't turn out to be a Bloodmoon rehash though.

I have to say, I've got high hopes.  Bethesda has shown that they will listen to us to a degree...they avoided in Fallout 3 a lot of the mistakes they made with Oblivion.

Things that occur to me:-
It will have to run on an XBox360 and P/S3, so that limits things quite a bit.
They may or may not use Gamebryo. (Do THEY know? Maybe not.) If they don't I find the release date rather ambitious. Of course maybe they mean XNGine? (grins) If it's a new engine, what's producing the screens they are demoing?

If they do have a new engine in mind, we may have a problem. Who's to say it will be amenable to modding as the Nif format?

At present, that 11/11/11 date sounds like fluff. If they are planning a release in less than a year, I'd want them to know what engine they propose, and that it be tried and tested!

about max von sydow, still have fond memories of him playing chess with the death (think it was the death? ) in that bergman movie everyone in sweden had to watch,anyway it would be cool if so but guess one just have to wait and see how it turns out in the end.

steam,no biggie for me,have unlimited but not the fastest line,specially up is slow,more in principality,buy a game on cd/dvd and play your purchased product whenever you want and without the need to be online,for whatever reason.In the past I played on a never connected pc and used one pc separate for everything online,didn´t had crapware/malware/spyware or viruses on that offline pc then,suspect I´m not alone in doing so,even if I have given up on that part,too much hassle.So hopefully they don´t demand that with tes 5.

I'm really not surprised they stuck with the realm of men.  Nor am I surprised they went with Skyrim; Beowulf was incredibly successful. I think (with a few exceptions) it's kind of hard to get people immersed in completely alien settings.  People are more comfortable with what is familiar to them.  Gamers might like to visit foreign lands and extra terrestrial landscapes, but if you look at most games, home base is almost exclusively human settlements.

Popular examples:

Mass Effect: you and your crew are human, though you can have aliens in your party.
Diablo: self-evident.  Good guys are human, bad guys aren't.
WOW: true, you can play as an orc or an elf, but generally speaking, the entire game takes place in a Terran-type landscape.
Starcraft: same as Diablo
TES: you can play as any race, but still the landscape is Terran and except for the Telvanni lands, the settlements are familiar to consumers as being Earth-like.  Evidenced particularly by the fact Elven and Beast races wear the same clothing as humans; the furnishings inside the mushrooms are even the same as those in the houses.

My point is, until being an non-human in a land of non-humans becomes what the major market-share wants, *all* major game releases will be in the lands of Men . . . or as humanoid as possible.

I put my cynical head on and thought about sales-droids I have known.
Quite a few of them would not grasp the difference between 'game engine' and 'graphics engine', or even care.
I haven't been able to find much concrete, except reference to 'replacing the scripting'.
It occurs to me that coming up with a new Construction set and replacing their own custom scripting language yet again, would qualify as a 'brand new engine' in the eyes of marketing people.

Am I being too cynical again?

I'm mildly exited about this news .. I'll leave further judgement of the game until more is known about it. I do like that we'll (hopefully) get more Lore about the Nords and their land(s) .. but I too had hoped that it would have been Summerset Isles that would have been the focus .. as there's so little Lore on that and it seems so interesting ..
Also the thing that should no longer be named in this thread has me concerned ...
