[WIP] Temple Swords

This mostly came out of a private sword mod but then I really started thinking ... what if each Tribunal temple in Morrowind (or most of them, at least) had a sword to a patron saint? The two swords I have done are supposed to be reminiscent of the types of swords in India (I tried a pata once, an interesting result it was!) and that's going to be the theme of it. I need to cut down on poly's for the second sword so far, I don't actually know how much it has haha, it just looks like a lot because I'm used to low-poly modeling. Another aspect I want to improve on is textures. I'm using vanilla textures (or textures I made myself, in the case of the hilt).

Hi Turelek - liked your Temple swords.  But anyway the subject of paid mods aside, I think a cross platform library of NIF's and Textures for Morrowind thru Skyrim would be a nice Cash Cow for specialty packs for factions, cultures (Assyrian for Dwarves, Roman for Imperial, Mesoamerican for Argonians, etc), flora and fauna   like, say, for what the toy industry does for action figures and play sets.

Work on Dante continues.

Thank you Phobos, glad to see we agree on most of the cultures and races haha! I don't know what you think of the others, but that's probably for a different thread. I went with India for the Dunmer for a few reasons, the swords are part of another thing for Morrowind I would like to do -  to add in more Eastern elements. Sometime in the future, I made a Byzantine armour mod and I would like to redo it and suit up the Empire in better looking Eastern Roman armour (and try iconography with the nine divines). I want to obviously keep the fantasy in, though minor things like renaming the title of "King" to "Sultan" or "Raja" for Helseth is something I want to look at, for instance.

I guess with the swords, I need to replace some motifs. I always preferred silver but doing some Bonemold instead of silver for the guard bits might keep it appearing Dunmer while also maintaining the Eastern brass-coloured motif. Think I want to change the hilt texture to line up with bonemold too, if I pursue that.

Updates! I retextured the temple swords of saint Veloth and saint Rilms. They both look significantly better. Still haven't gotten around to a hilt texture so the black cloth will have to do as a placeholder for now. I also made the temple sword of saint Nerevar. His is based off of a Firangi (a design I was hesitant to go with; being both 17th century based and imported from the West). I think it looks good, it could benefit from an independent sword tip so I can use that ebony blade tip texture for the top. I'm thinking I might just nuke the saint Veloth sword design, suck it up and remake it. Using Bonemold shields as guards has been awesome I think, though. Also loving curved hilts.

In terms of stats, I haven't been giving it too much thought as I still have a ways to go. Ideally there's a sword for every temple, a patron saint if you will. Wielded by a champion or such, or even just displayed. Anyways, I'm thinking they should be closer to Dwarven or Orcish despite the ebony metal. They're supposed to be ceremonial, not used for actual fighting.

Thank you Abiel!  :D  Hope to work on some more soon, I've taken a small break to focus on studying. That being said, I do need to think of who to do next.  :chinscratch:

Quite nice, and realistic, too. Nothing like the overly fantastic Ebony Sabre/Ordinator's Sword or the swords of Almalexia and Nerevar.

Thank you very much DonnerGott! Yes, the line between realistic and fantasy is something I'm trying to stay in between. I guess this would be more light-fantasy with the fantasy shield guards (though I love those!)

I'm wondering, however, if I should stick entirely to swords or throw in some maces or axes (or both?) into the mix. The only concern there I think would be throwing in the iconography. I do think there might be some creative things I could do with the maces though. I'll have to put that to practice in a bit!

Sorry for the double post, I've got some updates! All of the blades thus far have proper blade tips now.

Image
Felms WIP. I think either the guard needs to be shorter or the blade needs to be longer. Perhaps a bit of both. This is also a two-hander.

Sword of Saint Rilms also with a proper tip.

Sword of Saint Veloth does not look half as bad as it used to. Removing that wide handle bit really did change the appearance of the sword. The blade still looks a bit rough though, but otherwise I won't have to remake the whole thing from scratch now.

I think doing a dual-wield set of the Sword of Vivec and Almalexia at Ghostgate or Vivec would be fun. Though that might give it a more combat-looking label, as swords they already possess.  :chinscratch:

I finally got around to adding to the collection and made the Sword of Saint Roris. I think the blade could be a bit thicker though I need to see it in-game. I'm thinking with Saint Meris I'll do a mace.

Tis a nice looking Sword !!
I would use it,  I am in work on a Saintly ESP involving the Dunmer Saints, a NEW weapon, armor or other items for the player to receive as a reward or just finding it would always be nice to have, rather then just renaming something

Enjoy

Sounds great Dietbob! Since that sword, I've made a mace for Saint Felms (rather than a sword). I'm not too happy with it, trying to capture the look of a Persian/Turkish mace is definitely tough. If you want these meshes I'll definitely send them over to you, I'll need to make the icon textures though unless you feel like making those for yourself.

PM Sent, go ahead and make whatever you want with these. If you find suitable texture choices I'll certainly use them! I'd love the hilts to be a bit more diverse instead of just that placeholder black cloth texture I use.

Manouel I Komnenos and Maria Komnene
Byzantines! That's lovely, I'd love to get around sometime to changing the visual style of the Imperial Cult in Morrowind. Byzantine art would be perfect for it, definitely. It could reflect the Imperial Cult adapting to Dunmer ways or becoming extremely dogmatic and making icons!  :D

I can certainly help with that

Took a quick look at your meshes, I can work with these   the Saint Felms Mace is missing the black cloth texture, will any black cloth suffice or was it a design of some type?

What were the actual Byzantine Colors or standards   I can make shields and COA for that

Dunmer Saint's Tapestries  I did this some time ago, but recently updated it

For the black cloth, I think I included it with the files. Any texture will do though, it was basically a placeholder until I found something better.

When it comes to Byzantine symbols, the last dynasty of the Byzantines, the Palaiologoi had an extensive amount of imagery. With a few exceptions, a lot of the images the Byzantines used were religious. Such as icons of Christian Saints, Jesus, or Mary. The earlier times of the Byzantines (when they could be called Eastern Romans) used the chi-rho in more than a few areas, as it was the symbol of Constantine.

Heh, we might need to make a new topic for this so we don't derail the original thread too much.

This version I took the liberty of increasing the head size by .125

whichever you like :)

I love the slightly larger mace head! I was a bit worried that my own version was a touch too small. I also like that hilt texture - especially for the mace. Gives the mace a very strong look.

Yeah a Big Head for bonking is always a good thing,   I still want to mess with the shaft texture

Glad you like so far

Also

Have you already considered Weapons for the other Saint's

If not I would like to suggest the Following base from the Saint's Sphere of Influence

Aralor - Hammer  (2 Headed, Blunt on one side, Pick on the other)
Olms  - Club
Meris - Scythe
Llothis - Hammer (2 headed)  Blunt both sides
Seryn  - Staff

Others I need to think on a bit more

Enjoy
