So, there's this game called ARMA 2. It's been out for a while, but never gained much popularity. But now, a mod called "DayZ" has been released for it. DayZ is a zombie/survival mod first and foremost. But it's not like Left 4 Dead or Dead Island. It is a hyper-realistic survival mod. I could attempt to explain it as I have in the past, but it's better to just put some links up explaining the basic idea.

I'm hoping somebody here also has the game. I have found that it is nearly impossible to survive on my own, though it may possibly just be because I am an idiot.

I don't have it sorry Maiq.    I must survive on the battlefield in Rome and on the Tamriel continent first before I even consider to play DayZ, which I doubt will happen in my life time that's for sure.

A while ago my friend asked me to try this out.  I was just about to buy it when we realized his computer couldn't run it reasonable (or at all).  I looked up quite a bit of videos, and I still really want to play it, and he might be getting a new computer within a reasonable time frame.  I can tell you that everyone that played it (well all the serious gamers; it wasn't built for casual gamers) loved it.  

This game did so many things no other game has ever done.  Persistent MMO shooters hardly exist.  A TRULY realistic shooter doesn't even exist (the bleeding effect is neat in dayz coupled with food, water, etc.)  It's also the only TRULY realistic zombie game.  And I've seen optional persistent death on MMO, but it was never the game's actual focus before.  Great game, even though I never played it.  

Still considering buying it regardless of whether he can, but I'm not sure.

I'd gladly team up with you if you play, Wolf. I seriously suck at this game by myself I'm gonna be honest, every time I play, I die before I even find a gun. Entering a town unarmed is virtually suicide, because there are so many zombies there, but you have to enter towns unarmed because that's where all the guns are. It get really nerve-racking.
But I think that's the fun part. The fact that one wrong move costs you everything you had.

I don't know, Wolf.... since zombies don't  actually exist, it's kind of... impossible to find a "TRULY realistic" game that depicted them.

My only problem with it right now is I think (and again, I haven't actually played so I don't KNOW) the zombies could be a little tougher.  I understand your main threat is supposed to be the people but it seems like the people kill you 75% of the time.  The best part is when two people meet and they have their guns aimed at each other because they don't know if the other is going to attack or help them.

@Davada, it's pretty realistic .  My point was it did a lot of things no game has ever attempted.  But really its not the zombies.  Its just realism in general.  IE if you get hit by one you don't take damage, you start bleeding.  Then you have to bandage yourself up before you run out of blood.  So how much 'damage' you take is dependent on how long your there without medical attention.  My only problem is the only way to recover blood is through blood transfusion with another player (I think he did that to make people less hostile) and blood never recovers by itself overtime.  I don't know another game with that mechanic.

I wouldn't say its 100% realistic, thats not possible....and honestly that would be the worst game ever.

Actually, wolf, the zombies are quite a problem. It's not their toughness that gets you. It's their speed and their numbers that will overwhelm you. I've died several times today, but I've only been killed by another player once.

Really?  Well it wasn't before, but they do fly those patches out quite often.  From what I saw there is rarely a large bunch of zombies in one area, but it wouldn't suprise me if that were patched, it was a major complaint.  Also, did they do something about the tents?  I heard they were a huge problem in that people set up a billion tents all over the world so everywhere you went there was a campsite right there.

Groups of people will set up "tent cities" to store their stuff. But you won't run into them very often. It would be nice to, though, because they usually keep their vehicles and supplies around there.

Oh, and I finally got a gun. It's a Makarov. I do not feel any better about my chances against the zombies.

Oh that's why the zombies got so much harder.  When it started, you never started with a gun.  Then he let you start with the Makarov, and I guess he reversed the patch to make it more challenging.  It seems like sneaking is the best way to get around the zombies.  Since if you fire the weapon they all come running at you and if you bolt you'll run into more.

I really like the day and night feature too.  If you play and its midnight in the country your server is, you will be playing in the dark.  If its morning, you'll be playing in daylight.  Although I do wish they mixed it up a little.  What if I play everynight from 10:00 to 12:00.  I'll never be playing in the day, just the night.  I think it should be on a 1hr = 2hr ingame clock.  

Also, on their website they have an average life expectancy counter.  Right now its 49 minutes.

Yep, and when it's night it's pitch black outside. You need a light source, which gives away your position, unless you find night vision goggles  Oh, and my life expectancy is about 13 minutes.

I watched the Yogscast's videos on youtube, and I'll almost certainly get it, I'll let you know when I do. If you want to play together, I have to let you know now that I'll most likely become a murderous thief as soon as I have a nice gun.  

P.S. Just so It's clear, I won't be murdering/robbing you, but you may be an accomplice.

Yeah, it's quite a process to install and set up. It took me two days. I won't be back in the game til tomorrow morning, though, so no need to rush. Just make sure you do it right, or you'll end up like me, spending forever trying to figure out what went wrong.

I use the Steam version. And the install instructions are mostly online, on the DayZ site. But I wouldn't know. I don't read installation instructions

I downloaded the latest version from the official site but there seems to be a slightly newer version that most of the severs are running.

In other news, I crawled around in the pitch black night and somehow found a hatchet, which I used to kill some zombies that detected me. Lost some blood though, and I can't get that back unless I get a blood transfusion. DN, care to donate?

The base game, Arma II, has one of the most advanced and confusing controls of any game.  Around half the keyboard can be used to play.  I recommend going through the first tutorial for Arma II multiple times until you can beat every part of it.  (I have the free version of Arma II).

The big things is z is to go prone, x is to crouch, c is to stand up.  Any action (such as pick up, get in, etc.) is accessed by the mousewheel.  I didn't know these things until about 6 hours into the game and it would have saved me so much time if I did

Yeah, the controls took me a while to get the hang of, and I still don't quite have it down yet. But Wolf pretty much has the basics. In addition, use numpad to look around without moving your entire character. I use that while going anywhere.
