Alas I can not give any advice, or helpful information about 3ds Max, as I've never owned a copy. I use Blender, as do most folks that model here, as I'm sure you already know. It will be nice to have someone that can answer questions about 3ds Max from people that may stop by to inquire about issues that they are having with said 3d modeling program. Sadly though this means that likely as not you might not get any helpful information out of the regular flies on the wall around here.
What's the alternative to smoothing groups in Blender? In 3DS Max we have a table from 1-32 of smoothing groups. I can assign faces I want to smooth together to one smoothing group and assign another group of faces to a different smoothing group so I get smooth surfaces and sharp corners. Does Blender have something like this?
As for the pieces, I always thought it was standard to connect them all into one mesh. How do you verify that they are all connected? Or do you just loosely place them on top of one another?
