GHF will be loosing our Chat

Looks like GHF's current chat provider is going to be closing down it's chat services come the end of the month. I will share with you some snippets from an email I received today from the envolve people

Dear Envolve Customer -

I'm writing to inform you that the Envolve chat service will be shutting down on September 30th. Read on for details and what replacements for Envolve are available.

We’ve chosen to sunset Envolve in order to focus entirely on Firebase, our developer platform. Over the last 3 years, Firebase has grown tremendously and is now the focus of our engineering team and business. As a result, we haven't been able to give enough attention and maintainance to Envolve.

After some careful deliberation, we reached the conclusion that our Envolve customers will be better served by switching to another chat service. This was a difficult decision for us, but we believe it is the best outcome for everyone. Other chat services are now more full-featured, are better maintained, and have support on more platforms.

Therefore, on September 30th, 2014, all Envolve services will be discontinued.

DO not worry though I'm sure our intrepid lead will let us know what is going to happen after Envolve closes it's doors.


On a  side note maybe it would not be a bad thing for us to loose our chat boxes for a while it seems the forum side of the site was hampered a bit by the chat, maybe things will pick up.

It does beg to be mentioned that there is a XAT Chat that can be used when the Envolve chat is closed down.

That's a pity, but maybe this will drive a migration to irc. I know there are web based clients available.

You know, to be honest, I still think even years after the fact that the chat was sort of a negative move as regards the health of the forum as a whole.  If there had been a permanent IRC network associated with the site that the regulars could hang out in, even that would probably have had less of a negative impact on actual posting rates than integrating a chat client directly into every single page of the site.

Even when I show up once every couple months these days, I'll often just speak to people in chat and maybe write one post.  I know it's not like nothing interesting happens around here; there's several folks who have been whipping up models at some feverish pace for some unknown (and presumably diabolical) purpose for years, but we see very little of it in the forums.  It gives the at least partially erroneous impression that this place is well and truly dead.

Regardless of my feelings on the idea of having a chat client as a whole, and I'd be loathe to give it up now knowing what benefits it offers, I will say that the current one should have been replaced years ago or even never implemented in the first place.  I've never liked its clunky intrusive manner, or especially the way it mutes me if I dare speak at any pace quicker than 'tedious crawl.'

Also who was it that knows how to integrate forums? I wanna have decent forums on my own site; kind of like how these forums work with MMH.

Hey everyone,

long time no see.

A while back the chat client changed and I couldnt access the chat and talk to you wonderful people. This was ngeative on my part as i found the real time chat great for bouncing ideas, projects updates, getting help in real time ect...

The demise of the chat wasnt 100% the cause of myt disapperance but it did play a small part. Now I see the chat is forever gone.

Perhaps we  could set up a skype group or other chat method?

Bah Maiqdaboss you doesn't has to sit in chat, there are plenty of threads one could necromance, and then maybe even start your own thread.

Also I only saw that you had been in chat so I must have not been around when you were in chat.
As every one knows I have this thing where i get up and walk away from my PC, with out closing/exiting the chat

The idea of the chat was good but it did detract from the forums and everything written was lost each night. To have the chat work well you'd need a lot of traffic and even the sites that do have the traffic needed would not have enough to feed both the forums and the chat for such a niche interest.

I think it's a good thing and will work out better for the site.

The thing about the chat was to get quick input. The chat was never meant to take any traffic away from the forums.
There is still the temporary chat linked in a few of the above posts.
I'll relink it here just in case it is hard to find further up.

This really sucks to be honest. its a lot better to just have a conversation with someone rather than having to wait days for people to check their inbox...

Or you know maybe some people that want to have a conversation can start a forum thread, and every one can contribute to the conversation should they desire.  
That is unless you are talkin behind our backs.

There is a new temporary chat room here, still testing out the functions, but it seems better then the Xat chat we have been using.

Try dolphin browser and turn OFF mobile versions in the settings.  Dolphin will then trick your android into thinking you're on windows OS and it will run the exact same way.
