Disney buys LucasFilm, Star Wars 7 in 2015

Yep. Disney bought LucasFilm for $4 billion and they have announced Star Wars Episode 7 for a 2015 release. As if the prequels weren't bad enough.
Now, I don't know how many Star Wars fans there are here in GHF, but I do know that as a child, I obsessed over the original trilogy. The prequels all sucked, save for Episode 3. But this, this is just bad.

Maybe they'll branch off the main storyline, I mean come on, the SW Universe is probably the biggest in Sci Fi, there's PLENTY to work with without botching something beautiful.

They better stay away from two things: the movie plots and the Old Republic timeline. They can go as far into the future as they want from there.

Star Wars has a rich pool of lore in which movies can be made from, just look at the many books written for it and the computer games by Bioware and Obsidian. I think trying to pick up right after the last movie is a bad idea because the actors aren't really fit for the parts anymore, but anywhere else in the history of the property would make for a good movie. I'll withhold judgment until I hear more about what Disney is planning on doing.

I don't even know where Carrie Fisher (Leia) is these days. Obviously Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are far too old, and they have other stuff going on anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing Clint Eastwood somehow get into the next movie

In the books Solo and Leia got married as well as Luke and a former Imperial assassin, so a movie could be made about their descendants. That might be interesting to see. Luke did try to rebuild the Jedi order, so Disney could take it from there.

Disney has explicitly stated that it will be a continuation of the original return (so post-Return of the Jedi) and will include Luke Skywalker and some new characters. It will not be related at all to the extended universe of the books and will be an all new set of movies. The first is coming out in 2015, the second in 2017, and the final in 2019.

That being said, I think it could end up being good. Rick McClellan helped keep George Lucas at bay. You want to know why Empire Strikes Back was so good? McClellan. Want to know why the first half of Return of the Jedi was great, with a weak second half? George Lucas called the shots with the Ewoks and the Forest Moon of Endor. If McClellan had had his way, there would have been no second Death Star, nor any of the silliness in the second half of Return of the Jedi. That all being said, George Lucas isn't a very good storyteller all by his lonesome self, and this is why the second trilogy was sub-par. There was no one to call out Lucas or question his decisions and he, ultimately, had complete control over every aspect of the second trilogy.

Without Lucas' direct supervision, a new trilogy stands a great chance. Lucas will still stay on as a creative consultant, though, so he won't totally abandon the series. I think fresh blood can make it great, and I don't think Disney would drop the ball knowing that they have that large of a franchise on their hands.

My only complaint in this regard is that Star Wars is suddenly going right up there with Marvel and DC in the list of things with reboots I have to keep track of.

Hope to see them do something cool with it.  Honestly, a different take on the future of the Star Wars 'verse featuring Luke could be cool as hell, given how obnoxiously retarded certain elements of the Expanded Universe was with a new super weapon every other book and fifteen different authors with different tastes trying their damndest to murder off whichever character they hated the most.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mark Hamill come back in an Obi Wan type role.  If they had a decent script and got the original cast to do cameos it would be gold to those of us who saw the first three movies in the theater when they were initially released.  There is no way they could lose money on it.

I agree that I'm simply curious to see where this goes. I don't have high hopes, but I'm remaining optimistic that this could be a decent 3rd trilogy.

The biggest problem I had with the second trilogy wasn't necessarily the story, it was the acting. Even Samuel E. Jackson, a great actor, came off as stiff and unbelievable. This new trilogy should have better acting and story telling because Disney does not want to lose money on it.

Yeah, Hayden Christensen was a right terrible actor. I think I've seen him in 1 movie since Revenge of the Sith. Ewan McGregor wasn't so bad. Yet somehow, they managed to make Liam Neeson look like a joke in Episode 1.

Disney also owns the rights to Marvel Entertainment (The Avengers), so maybe the new star wars movies might be directed by Joss Whedon. Joss did direct Firefly, so he knows his shit about making crazy good space shows.

Now..let's face it.  Who DOESN'T want to see Darth Maul (or his clone, anyway) battling Iron Man and the Hulk?  Or, Luke Skywalker attempting to "Use The Force" on Captain America?  I mean, come on!  The potential for crossovers just increased exponentially!
